Wide Support 4v4+2.

Set up side lines just outside the circle.

There are two even sided teams on the pitch. The team in possession have two jokers working on the outside of the wide channels which they can use to play the ball to at any time.

If the defending team win the ball they can attack the goal once someone has either passed to a support wide player or someone has received a pass over the 23m line.

Key Coaching Points

  • Players need to set their space. This requires them to lead out of a space they wish to lead into to get the ball. This is a double movement to take a defender away to then lead back into the space.

  • Can wide support players position themselves, so they are always able to receive the ball without being the defenders shadow (within defenders reach).

  • Can players set space to give and go. This requires them to play the ball to the player and then lead ahead of the ball, getting some space on their defender to then get the ball back from the player. The wide support player needs to read the lead. Does the player want the ball hard at them and to their stick or weighted ball into space?

Progression to Challenge Groups

  • Reward players that get ahead of play with a give and go by using the wide support players.

  • Reward with a number of points when a shot on goal or a goal is generated from using the wide support, either directly or indirectly.

Simplification for lower ability groups

  • Have two neutral people in the wide channels that can pass and receive to both teams when they are in possession.
  • Reduce the number of people on the pitch to give them more space to play in.
