1v1 – Winner Stays On – Defensive Focus

Pitch space 30m long by 25m wide. Use throw down lines to denote a shooting area. Split group into two teams of 3 each.

Attacker tries to eliminate the defender and get a shot away. If attacker scores, their team stays as the attackers and next player waiting attacks the same defender. If defender wins ball and feeds to team mate to set up attack in the other direction.

Have a pile of balls in the middle for quick restarts if the play breaks down and the ball can’t be collected quickly.

Key Coaching Points

Work hard to stay in the contest and disrupt the attacker by using jab and shave tackles
Match feet direction with the attackers feet.
Try to stay balanced with both hands on the stick and stay on forehand as much as possible.

Progression to Challenge Groups

Encourage the next attacker to start as soon as the previous attacker scores so the defender is out of position and scrambling.

Simplification for lower ability groups

Narrow the pitch
Allow the defender to reset each time
Don’t penalise accidental fouls, encourage the defender to try and cause disruption.
